Manchester United have confirmed the departure of Ruud van Nistelrooy from his interim manager role, just a day after he guided the team to a commanding 3-0 Premier League victory over Leicester City.
The announcement coincides with the arrival of new permanent manager Ruben Amorim in Manchester, where he was welcomed by Chief Executive Omar Berrada. The 39-year-old Portuguese coach is currently awaiting his visa before he can officially begin his duties on the training ground.
Van Nistelrooy’s brief but successful tenure saw him secure three wins and a draw across all competitions following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal. The club paid tribute to their former striker in a statement: “Ruud is, and always will be, a Manchester United legend. We are grateful for his contribution and the way in which he has approached his role throughout his time with the club. He will always be very welcome at Old Trafford.”
The 48-year-old Dutchman’s departure also marks the exit of his coaching team, including assistants Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar, and Pieter Morel. The club has indicated they will announce Amorim’s staff in due course.
Despite expressing his desire to remain with the club following Amorim’s appointment, van Nistelrooy’s tenure concludes after helping revitalize key players, including captain Bruno Fernandes, who scored four goals in four games under his leadership after a 17-game goalless streak.
Van Nistelrooy’s impact was evident in his final post-match comments, where he highlighted the improved team spirit: “There’s a foundation in the past four games where there was strong unity, good spirit, players who were looking for results,” he reflected after Sunday’s victory, during which he received an emotional farewell from the Old Trafford faithful.
The club currently sits 13th in the Premier League with 15 points from 11 matches, though they remain just four points away from third place as Amorim prepares to take the helm.
