Trump Names Elon Musk to Lead New Government Efficiency Department

Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to Spearhead Federal Bureaucracy Overhaul in 2025 Administration

President-Elect Donald Trump has appointed Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, to head a newly proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), signaling a major push to restructure federal agencies when he takes office in January 2025.

Musk, who owns the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and backed Trump during the November 5 presidential election campaign against Vice-President Kamala Harris, will co-lead the department with entrepreneur and politician Vivek Ramaswamy.

According to Tuesday’s announcement, the appointment aligns with Trump’s “Save America” agenda, focusing on dismantling government bureaucracy, reducing regulations, and cutting wasteful spending. Trump, who secured victory with more than 270 electoral college votes, emphasized the new department’s role in addressing the federal government’s annual $6.5 trillion spending.

“I look forward to Elon and Vivek making changes to the Federal Bureaucracy with an eye on efficiency and, at the same time, making life better for all Americans,” Trump stated in the announcement, adding that the initiative would target “massive waste and fraud” in government spending.

The appointment comes ahead of Trump’s inauguration for his second and final term as U.S. President on January 25, 2025.
