Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation Takes Bold Steps to End Airport Harassment
New Measures Aim to Eliminate Extortion and Improve Traveler Experience at International Airports
In a move to address long-standing traveler complaints, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced measures to combat harassment and extortion at Nigeria’s international airports. Approved by Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo, the initiative signals a decisive government response to mounting public frustration.
“Yesterday, I approved some far-reaching measures by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) aimed at curbing the menace of harassment of travelers by various agencies of government stationed at our international airports,” Keyamo declared in a pointed X post. “We have received too many complaints and it is time to act decisively!”
Sweeping Reforms Set to Transform Airport Experience
The new measures represent a multi-pronged approach to eliminating systemic issues at Nigerian airports:
- Immediate dismantling of joint inspection tables
- Launch of “Operation Air Clean” task force
- Deployment of mystery shoppers with body cameras
- Establishment of magistrate courts within international airports
FAAN’s Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku emphasized the critical role of technology and collaboration in these reforms. “We aim to streamline passenger search processes and enhance the overall travel experience, while completely eliminating extortion, harassment, and touting activities,” she stated.
High-Tech Oversight and Immediate Action
As part of the measures, FAAN will deploy mystery shoppers equipped with body cameras to assess official performance at security and screening areas. This innovative system will provide real-time monitoring and accountability for airport personnel.
Kuku ordered the leveraging of technology to reduce manual searches and improve passenger interactions. This approach not only promises to minimize opportunities for harassment but also streamline airport processes, potentially reducing wait times and improving overall traveler experience.
