I’m a No-Party Statesman – Obasanjo Declares

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared himself a “no-party statesman,” distancing himself from any political affiliations while calling for optimism despite Nigeria’s current challenges. The former leader made these remarks on Saturday at a thanksgiving service held at the Methodist Church, Nigeria, Cathedral of Unity in Abuja.

Speaking at the 80th birthday celebration of Onyema Ugochukwu, former Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Obasanjo emphasized the importance of maintaining hope during difficult times. “But remember what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 13. Your faith must not diminish. You must never lose hope. Even when things are as gloomy as they are in Nigeria today, we must remain optimistic and hopeful,” he stated.

The former president used the occasion to recognize Ugochukwu’s loyalty during his 1999 presidential campaign, particularly noting the journalist’s support despite another prominent figure, Chief Alex Ekwueme, also contesting for the PDP presidential ticket at the time. “When we came together, it was during the campaign. I’ve known a little bit about you by your reputation. We were two candidates competing in PDP – myself and Alex Ekweme,” Obasanjo recalled.

In his message to the celebrant, Obasanjo stressed the importance of maintaining a life dedicated to service and love. “Love for your family. Love for friends and foes. Love for your community. Love for your state. Love for your country. Love for humanity. And love for God,” he advised Ugochukwu.

The declaration of his non-partisan status comes at a time when Nigeria faces various social and economic challenges, with the former president maintaining that hope and optimism remain essential for the nation’s progress.
