Gospel Singer Sinach Faces ₦5bn Lawsuit Over Hit Song “Way Maker”

Copyright Dispute Alleges Producer Maye's Contributions Were Not Properly Credited

Nigerian gospel singer Sinach, whose real name is Osinachi Egbu, is facing a ₦5 billion ($5 billion) lawsuit over her internationally acclaimed song “Way Maker.” The suit, filed by music producer Michael Oluwole, known as Maye, alleges copyright infringement and seeks a declaration of co-ownership of the song.

Maye claims he worked as a studio engineer on “Way Maker,” which was released in December 2015, and contributed to its recording, mixing, mastering, and creation of instrumental accompaniments. He argues that Sinach released the song commercially without formalizing an agreement or compensating him, thus violating his performer’s rights.

In the suit filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos, Maye is demanding general damages of ₦5 billion for the alleged cumulative infringements of his rights. He is seeking a court order to determine an equitable division of fees from licenses or assignments of the copyright, as well as compel Sinach to disclose all related licenses and account for the accrued fees.

Sinach, represented by Emeka Etiaba (SAN) of Etiaba Chambers, has denied the allegations, maintaining that she is the sole author of “Way Maker.” Her legal team contends that Maye’s role was limited to mixing the master recording, for which he was paid ₦150,000 (approximately $300), and that this payment absolves Sinach of any obligation to grant him copyright or performer’s rights.

The case began hearing at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday, with Maye providing testimony and affirming his claims under cross-examination. Sinach’s legal team strongly opposed the plaintiff’s assertions, questioning the legitimacy of his claims to co-authorship and ownership.

The trial has been adjourned to 29 and 30 January 2025 to allow the defense to present its case.

“Way Maker” has become a global anthem, transcending cultural and religious boundaries. The song has been performed by notable Christian singers, won accolades such as the GMA Dove Song of the Year, and has been translated into over 50 languages, making it a global hit in churches worldwide.
