In a surprising turn of events, Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, has issued a formal apology to Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, the House of Representatives member representing Aba North/South of Abia State, following a heated altercation during a package delivery.
The incident, which was captured on video and went viral on social media, showed Hon. Ikwechegh repeatedly slapping Abuwatseya, apparently angered by what he described as “the driver’s rude behaviour.” The lawmaker was also heard boasting that he could “make him disappear without trace” without any repercussions.
Driver’s Remorse and Plea for Unity
In a video released to the media, Abuwatseya expressed deep remorse and appealed for forgiveness from anyone offended by the incident. He acknowledged his “provocative utterances” towards Hon. Ikwechegh and used the opportunity to apologize directly to him.
“I want to tell Nigerians that it’s not time for us to start dividing ourselves based on religion, tribes, or regions,” Abuwatseya said. “We should actually come together, see how we can unite this nation and move it forward.”
The Bolt driver emphasized the need for unity and understanding among Nigerians, encouraging everyone to be “their brother’s keeper,” irrespective of ethnic background. He also thanked his family and supporters for standing by him, describing himself as a young hustler with no ill intent towards anyone.
Ikwechegh ‘s Apology and Dispute Resolution
In a separate development, Hon. Ikwechegh also offered a public apology in response to the incident. Through a message on his Instagram account, the lawmaker expressed regret over his conduct, apologizing to Abuwatseya, the Nigerian Police Force, and the National Assembly.
Hon. Ikwechegh acknowledged that his actions “fell short of the standards expected from a public officeholder” and stated that he had been provoked. He revealed that he and Abuwatseya had engaged in alternative dispute resolution, leading to a “mutual and respectful agreement” to resolve the situation.
The incident initially drew widespread attention and backlash, leading to legal proceedings against the lawmaker. However, the apologies and dispute resolution efforts by both parties aim to diffuse the tensions and promote a message of unity and understanding.
