Andy Murray to Coach Novak Djokovic for 2025 Australian Open

Former rival to guide 24-time Grand Slam champion through 2025 Australian Open campaign

In an unexpected turn of events in professional tennis, Novak Djokovic has appointed his former rival Andy Murray as his coach through to the 2025 Australian Open, where he aims to extend his record to 11 titles in Melbourne.

Murray, who retired in August following his exit from the Paris 2024 Olympics men’s doubles, will join the Serbian’s team during the off-season. The appointment marks an extraordinary partnership between two players who contested multiple Grand Slam finals, including four at the Australian Open.

“I am excited to have one of my greatest rivals on the same side of the net, as my coach,” Djokovic said. “Looking forward to start of the season and competing in Australia alongside Andy with whom I have shared many exceptional moments on the Australian soil.”

The collaboration comes at a crucial time for Djokovic, who split with coach Goran Ivanisevic earlier this year and experienced his first calendar year without a Grand Slam victory since 2017. With emerging stars Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz dominating the men’s game, Djokovic seeks to break clear of the record 24 Grand Slams he currently shares with Margaret Court.

Murray, who claimed victory over Djokovic in both the 2012 US Open and 2013 Wimbledon finals, joins his former rival’s camp after an intense competitive history that saw Djokovic prevail in the 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2016 Australian Open finals, as well as the 2016 French Open final.

The tournament is scheduled to run from January 12 to 26, 2025.
