Nigeria Exports Electricity Worth N181.62 Billion Despite Export Restrictions

Regulatory Commission Imposes Cap, Yet Cross-Border Power Delivery Continues

Nigeria has exported electricity worth N181.62 billion from January to September 2024, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The export breakdown reveals N58.65 billion in the first quarter, N63.28 billion in the second quarter, and N59.69 billion in the third quarter, primarily to Togo, Benin, and Niger Republic.

This export continues despite the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) imposing a cap in May that restricts electricity exports to 6% of Nigeria’s total grid electricity. The directive aims to prioritize domestic power supply.

NERC’s April 2024 Supplementary Order cited concerns over grid operations and power distribution efficiency. The six-month order took effect in May 2024.

The commission argued that excessive power exports were preventing Distribution Companies from meeting Service-Based Tariff obligations to local industrial, commercial, and residential customers.

NERC’s directive seeks to ensure Nigeria’s power supply can adequately serve its citizens while addressing grid imbalances.
